DADventure Disney Top 10 Tuesday – Top 10 Disney Parks Rides Worth The Wait

Welcome back to DADventure Disney’s round table of some of my favorite Disney Fan Parents on Instagram.

Every week, I work alongside this merry band of Disney fans to find our Top 10 favorites in all things Disney.

This week, the Disney Mega Fans are: @dad_at_disney, @daddingatdisney, @disenchanted.dad, @dismoms, @disneyblogmomma, @disneymagicmam, @disneymommingsohard, @milehighdisneymom, @suburbandisneymom, @the_pixie_mom, @truedisneymom, and yours truly @dadventuredisney.

Our topic this week: Top 10 Disney Parks Rides Worth The Wait!

I know, I know we all have FastPasses to use. (Read all about my Stress and Tips about FastPass Booking) But there ARE rides that we STILL are willing to wait in queue for, as long as it takes… usually.

I asked our amazing team of Disney Moms and Dads to share their favorites that they’d stand in line for. Before I get to the Top 10, here is your early breakdown from the data.

We have 12 ballots this week and 29 different rides were nominated. No one ride made it on every single ballot, didn’t even come close. Five rides made it on 8 ballots and those were the most universal across all the ballots. Six of the rides were only nominated once across all 12 ballots.

Five different rides, specifically from Disneyland, were submitted, but alas, didn’t make the list. Of course, many of the rides that did make the list can be found on either coast.

The park breakdown: 10 rides in Magic Kingdom, 6 in Hollywood Studios, 5 in Disneyland/California Adventure, and 4 each in Epcot and Animal Kingdom.

The first place votes were completely spread about. 7 different rides received at least 1 first place vote. The most first place votes for a ride was 3 for one specific ride.

It’s clear, everyone has differing opinions on the rides they’d wait for. Let’s get to the list!

Number 10

Kilimanjaro Safari
Animal Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 2.25, nominated on 5 of 12 ballots.

(David Roark, Disney)

With all the animatronics around the parks, waiting for this 20 minute drive through the ‘jungles and plains’ of Animal Kingdom to see REAL animals is totally worth it. Anyone with animal lovers in their family are sure to line up for this one.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Fast | Wait per 100 people ahead: 4 minutes | When to go: As soon as the park opens or in the 2 hours before closing, or use FastPass+

Number 9

Tower of Terror
Hollywood Studios
Top 10 Score: 2.50, nominated on 6 of 12 ballots.

Photo: Disney

Some are angry that Tower of Terror DROPPED all the way to 9th on this list. (Get it? Yeah, DAD jokes all day long over here…). People love the feeling and uncertainty of this ride. The theming is some of the best in the park. Not to be totally outshone, The Guardians of the Galaxy version in Disneyland was the highest rated DLP ride on our ballots with 1.75 points.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate | Wait per 100 people ahead: 4 minutes | When to go: First or last 30 minutes park is open or use Fastpass.

Number 8

Space Mountain
Magic Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 2.67, nominated on 7 of 12 ballots. 1 first place vote.

Photo: Disney

The classic Disney thrill ride has been zooming passengers around Walt Disney World since 1975. With speeds up to 35mph it’s a bit of a rush for folks tired of floating through the smaller rides. Space Mountain’s appeal is easy to see – dark, fast and classic – worth the wait.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate-fast | Wait per 100 people ahead: 3 minutes | When to go: When the park opens, or use FastPass+

Number 7

Expedition Everest
Animal Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 2.83, nominated on 5 of 12 ballots.

Photo: Disney

It’s a roller coaster that sends you up to 50mph hurdling towards ‘broken’ tracks and the elusive Yeti! Having cost around a cool $million to build in 2006, it better be worth standing in line for the 2.25 minutes of sheer joy.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate-fast | Wait per 100 people ahead: 4 minutes | When to go: Before 9:30 a.m., or after 3 p.m., or use FastPass+.

Number 6

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Magic Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 3.08, nominated on 7 of 12 ballots.

Photo: Disney

This coaster is very family-friendly. The theming is great and it fits in perfectly in Frontierland. It’s been running since 1979 and can reach speeds up to 35mph. And, it’s a train. Everyone loves trains – even the runaway kinds!

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate-fast | Wait per 100 people ahead: 2.5 minutes | When to go: Before 10 a.m., in the hour before closing, or use FastPass+

Number 5

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
Hollywood Studios
Top 10 Score: 3.83, nominated on 5 of 12 ballots. 2 first place votes.

Photo: Disney

YOU RIDE IN THE MILLENIUM FALCON!!! (Do I need to type any more? Yes? Ok, I will. You win.) This is the newest ride on the list (added in DLP and WDW just this summer). I haven’t heard any bad reviews of the ride and the queue is one of the most sophisticated every created.

TouringPlans Says: Nothing yet. It’s hasn’t been around long enough. But use the EXTRA EXTRA Magic Hours they have, the waits seem lower in the early morning. Also, single rider line is an awesome way to go.

Number 4

Splash Mountain
Magic Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 3.83, nominated on 8 of 12 ballots. 2 first place votes.

Photo: Disney

Yes, Smuggler’s Run and Splash Mountain are our first tie on a list. They both scored a 3.83. So, I go to number of first place votes – they both received 2. SO, we go to number of ballots and Splash Mountain wins 8 to 5. I’m guessing as more of us actually get to ride on Smuggler’s Run, it may creep back up the standings a bit and break this tie.

Splash Mountain is a fun kiddie-like dark ride through the story of Song of the South, with one BIG difference from the other boat rides… the flume – a 50ft drop at about 40mph. If the splash down doesn’t get you, the hidden misting and water sprayers will.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate | Wait per 100 people ahead: 3.5 minutes | When to go: As soon as the park opens, during afternoon or evening parades, just before closing, or use FastPass+

Number 3

Slinky Dog Dash
Hollywood Studios
Top 10 Score: 4.50, nominated on 8 of 12 ballots. 1 first place vote.

(David Roark, Disney)

Another coaster the whole family will love. (Maybe not the little little kids – you can check out our Top 10 Toddler Rides for Them!). This one is fairly new, having opened in June of 2018. It’s a fun 40mph ride by all your favorite Toy Story characters. Look for Wheezy’s big moment towards the end!

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate | Wait per 100 people ahead: 5 minutes | When to go: As soon as the park opens, during meals, or in the last hour the park is open.

Number 2

Avatar Flight of Passage
Animal Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 5.08, nominated on 8 of 12 ballots. 3 first place votes.

Photo: Disney

Flight of Passage received the most first place votes on our ballots – 3. Debuting in May, 2017 – people are STILL in line waiting to get on. An amazing queue helps the pain that there really is no choice but to wait for this amazing ride. FastPasses go quicker than ADR’s at Cinderella’s Royal Table. It’s the most interactive simulator you’ll find and no other ride is like it.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate | Wait per 100 people ahead: 4 minutes | When to go: As soon as the park opens, or use FastPass+

Number 1

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Magic Kingdom
Top 10 Score: 5.67, nominated on 8 of 12 ballots. 2 first place votes.

Photo: Disney

Still like new, from 2014, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a line you can’t avoid standing in – the ride is just that good. The FastPasses go QUICK, but so does the ride, maxing out around 34mph. The newer ride through one of Disney’s oldest movies is an amazing combo.

TouringPlans Says: Loading speed: Moderate-fast | Wait per 100 people ahead: 5 minutes | When to go: First 30 minutes the park is open or use FastPass+.
